John A. Hern, Jr. Founder of Greyhound Pets, Inc.Memorial services were Tuesday December 2, 2003, at English Funeral Chapel, Coeur d'Alene.
Mr. Hern, who was born in Spokane, died Wednesday, November 25, 2003
He lived in Spokane until moving to North Idaho in 1974. He graduated from the University of Washington with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
He owned Hern Ironworks in Coeur d'Alene, and also adopted out greyhounds as part of Greyhound Pets, Inc., which John founded in 1985. John was instrumental in finding homes for 4,200 greyhounds during his lifetime.
Mr. Hern was active in skiing and aviation. He enjoyed antique radios, letter-press printing, casting type and restoring antique printing equipment.
Survivors include his wife, Amy; two children, Jack of Hayden, Idaho, and Molly Southern of Spokane; his mother, Caroline, and a brother, Alan Hern, both of Spokane; a sister, Katherine Hern of Kirkland, Wash.; and six grandchildren.
