Dearly missed by Peg and Rick Barker
Eagle was a special boy with deep chocolate eyes and funny ears – one up and one down except for the times he was at the dog park. He was a gentle soul and never met a stranger – only new friends.
Eagle started out in our family as a foster in order to see if he and our little female Greyhound, Trey, could get along. Within a couple of weeks we knew we had failed fostering when we knew Eagle had chosen us for his forever family. It wasn’t long before we began to see his personality show through. He LOVED to go in the truck with us and eagerly jumped in but as soon as we started down the road Eagle would get car sick. He never actually “lost it” for which Rick and I were grateful. Gradually the car sickness lessened and finally disappeared all together.
Eagle’s all time favorite thing to do was to go to the dog park with “Dad” and Trey. Eagle made it his business to welcome each and every new dog to the park.
Eagle had a side to him I never would have guessed at. I sometimes had service men come to the house to repair the larger appliances and Eagle graciously welcomed each person into HIS house, except for one. Obviously, the man gave off something I didn’t pick up on. Eagle stood sideways in front of me and refused to allow the man close to me. I was impressed and knew I was always safe with Eagle protecting me.
After a couple of years, we noticed Eagle wasn’t playing as much and his back legs would suddenly give out from under him. Eventually, we saw that the pain medication wasn’t giving him the relief it had when we first gave it to him and we knew it was time to let him go. We’d had him such a short time and loved him with all our hearts.
Eagle crossed the Rainbow Bridge on August 21, 2011. It was two days before my birthday and my final gift to him. I know without a doubt that he’s made it his business to welcome each Greyhound as they come across the bridge.
We love you precious boy and someday we’ll see you again.
