Maya came to live with us when she'd just turned nine. Though she'd gone through many changes and health challenges she was such a happy girl. She loved life with her whole heart and showed it with delighted prancing, dancing, and sparkling eyes. Her happy dance to greet us, for anything involving food, for w-a-l-k-s or going to the b-e-a-c-h (we had to spell them so she didn't get too excited!), even her potty dance was joyfully contagious. She pranced full of love for everyone around her. Horses excited her to prance and roo, too. She did so love to sing and would always join in chorus.

Maya made everyone feel special. She had a gentle generous heart. Every day we sat with her, basking in her calm peaceful spirit. She loved her human kids and they loved to pamper her. Her grandmother shared that every time she came to visit, Maya would greet her with the other excited dogs, then wait for the right moment to quietly visit with her alone. Looking through pictures of Maya it becomes clear how she provided calm companionship to each of the foster greyhounds that shared our home. They snuggled up with her, finding comfort in their new surroundings.

Osteosarcoma took her much too soon. On our last morning together, Maya and I went outside and drank in the waking dawn. She looked around intently as if she knew it was her last and gently leaned on me. We listened to the robins sing and for a moment there was peace. To this day, when I hear "Morning has broken, like the first morning…" (Cat Stevens) I feel her close. And with that she has given me the gift of hope for each new day.

It is hard to believe that Maya graced our lives for only just shy of two years because she has changed our lives forever. In your honor, Maya, we will do our best to dance through our days as you taught us. Oh sweet Miss me-oh-Maya, our heart dog, we love you and miss you so. You are forever in our hearts.
Thank you GPI and Maya's foster mom, Susie, for enabling us to share life with Maya.
