Dearly missed by Kristi Milkovich:

HERBIE (Atascocita Item) was born June 24, 2010.  Lost his fight with bone cancer on August 5, 2021.

Herbie came to his “furever” home on December 17, 2013, and gave us so much joy and laughter (and frustration… lol).  When we brought him home, we noticed that he was very nervous and howled and paced when we were out of his sight and he bit his brother grey, Diver, on the ear the first day he was with us.  I called Moira to find out a little more about him, and found out he was a “re-home” due to SEVERE separation anxiety.  We were then on a mission to get him over it…  Luckily, I work from home so was with the boys daily.  It was Christmas time, so my husband and I went shopping separately, so someone was home with him all the time.  We gradually started leaving the home for short periods of time, watching him on our “puppy cam”.  He eventually got comfortable and knew that we would always come home again and he relaxed.  He was such a “love bug” and loved hugs and kisses and he would lay on top of me when I laid on the couch.

Over the years, he was quite accident prone, and we had many trips to the vet for sutures and such.  He was a trooper and pulled through better and stronger every time.  He also developed a “fear” of loud noises, and would pant and pace uncontrollably whenever we had a thunderstorm or when he heard fireworks – Thunder Shirt; and medications helped him “cope”  A year ago, he hurt his left back knee and when they x-rayed for possible ACL tear, they found cancer.  The vet said that we could either amputate the leg, or keep him comfortable with anti-inflammatories and pain meds.  Because amputation is not a cure, and because of his age, we opted for the medications; and he did GREAT for a year.

Unfortunately, the cancer became more aggressive in the past couple of weeks; and we had to make the decision to let him go before he broke his leg or worse.  He went to the Rainbow Bridge in the comfort of his home and with his head in my lap.  I miss this sweet boy, SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much!

RIP Herbie, Herbiekins; Herbie Derby….. WE LOVE YOU!!!
